Platelet Rich Fibrin

Platelet Rich Fibrin

Platelet Rich Fibrin is used by Dr. McLain for most surgical procedures including wisdom tooth removal, extractions, socket and ridge preservation, bone grafting and implant placement. Platelet Rich Fibrin, or PRF, allows the body to heal at accelerated rates utilizing the body's natural healing process.

What is Platelet Rich Fibrin?

Platelet Rich Fibrin is a by-product of your own blood. It is rich in platelets, white blood cells and growth factors. White blood cells play a role in our immune system helping prevent infection and aid in the healing process. Growth factors also aid in the healing process signaling other cells and attracting them to the surgical area to regenerate new tissue. Since PRF is highly concentrated with platelets and growth factors, the healing process is greatly accelerated.

How is Platelet Rich Fibrin Created?

At the beginning of your procedure, a small amount of blood will be collected and placed in a centrifuge. The centrifugation process separates the various blood cells and concentrates the platelets and white blood cells forming a fibrin clot.

How is Platelet Rich Fibrin Utilized?

This clot is used in different ways depending on the procedure being performed. For tooth removal, the entire clot is placed into the extraction site. For bone grafting, socket preservation or implant placement, only with portion rich in platelets, growth factors and white blood cells is utilized. This portion is morselized and blended with bone grafting material and/or your own bone. This blend is then placed into the surgical area.
